Square metre and wall area calculation
In short: Floor area (m²) = length × width. Perimeter (m) = 2 × (length + width). Wall area (m²) = perimeter × ceiling height, minus doors and windows. A 4.5 × 3.8 m room with a 2.65 m ceiling has 17.1 m² floor, 16.6 m perimeter and 43.99 m² of wall.

Formulas
| Quantity | Formula | Example (4.5 × 3.8 × 2.65 m) |
|---|---|---|
| Floor / ceiling area | length × width | 17.1 m² |
| Perimeter | 2 × (length + width) | 16.6 m |
| Wall area | 2 × (length + width) × height | 43.99 m² |
| Paintable area | walls + ceiling − openings | 43.99 + 17.1 − 3.5 = 57.59 m² |
Tips
- Divide centimetres by 100 (450 cm = 4.5 m)
- A standard door is about 1.9 m², a window about 1.5-2 m²
- Add 5-10% cutting waste for tiling
- For skirting, subtract door widths from the perimeter

How do I calculate the wall area of a room?
Add length and width, multiply by 2, then by the ceiling height. 4.5 + 3.8 = 8.3; × 2 = 16.6; × 2.65 = 43.99 m².
Should I subtract windows and doors?
For painting and wallpaper, yes if they are large. Small openings are often left in because cutting in takes time.
